Support for Depression
Self help groups can be very beneficial for depression. Support groups can help to reduce the symptoms of depression and substance abuse, and increase your self esteem to make you feel good about yourself. Your social skills can also be improved if you participate in a Support group. Not all support groups are in person. If you are uncomfortable with going out to seek help with other people, there are also online help groups available, and support can be given by telephone. Support groups can be very helpful to get through the depression. Remember that there are other people out there that are feeling the same thing as you. It could be helpful to share your journey with other people similar to you. You can meet new people, and share different ways to cope with the depression. It is also a good way to receive encouragement and to encourage others to get past the hard times. There is hope to get your life back on track. Although a person may be nervous to share what they are feeling with people that they don't know, it is a good way to listen to others share their experiences. There are many ways to find local help groups like searching the internet or phonebook or newspaper. You're not in this alone, there are many other people out there that are just like you, so support groups could really help to ease the depression.
Antidepressants
Antidepressants seem like a good way to make a depressed person feel better. In reality, antidepressants are overused and over prescribed. The use of antidepressants could give a person unwanted side effects. The overuse of antidepressants is a major public health issue. The prescribing of antidepressants has increased between 4 and 10 fold in the past decade. There are less people receiving antidepressants that are severely depressed than those that are only mildly depressed. In some cases, using antidepressants can deny a person the ability to receive health insurance. Insurance companies are not doing this to discriminate against people with mental illnesses. They are just trying to make it the most affordable for the most amount of people. There are millions of people using antidepressants. Since 1998, the sales of antidepressants has doubled. Since 2003, there has been nearly $13 million in sales for antidepressants. Antidepressants are very expensive for the consumer. They are prescribed too much for people that do not actually need them. Antidepressants can be prescribed for postpartum depression, panic disorders, social anxiety, sleep apnea, and smoking addiction.
Some side effects of antidepressants can include: dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, constipation, sedation, sleep disruption, weight gain, headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, agitation, and anxiety, and more..
If there are so many possible side effects, than why would a person want to take these antidepressants?

Ways to Cope With Depression
Depression is hard to go through. Sometimes it is just good if you do simple things to make you feel better. Comforting activities that help to relax can really help. Taking a long bubble bath or a hot shower could help you relax. Spending time with your pets can also be beneficial. Its always nice taking a long walk with your dog or curling up with your cat. Watching your favorite movie is also a good way to cope. Writing what your feeling down on paper is a good way to let it out. Whether its poetry, prose, or a journal, anything could help to relieve what you are feeling. Going to a park where it is relaxing and peaceful is a great way to boost your mood. Spending time with your family and friends is fun. Do something that you like to do.
Lifestyle changes like sleeping more and eating healthy and exercising can make a person feel good about themselves. Being active is much better than staying at home. It can help to ease the symptoms of depression. It helps to increase blood and oxygen flow throughout the body. Finding ways to deal with stress by doing breathing exercises can be very calming.
