Support for Depression
Self help groups can be very beneficial for depression. Support groups can help to reduce the symptoms of depression and substance abuse, and increase your self esteem to make you feel good about yourself. Your social skills can also be improved if you participate in a Support group. Not all support groups are in person. If you are uncomfortable with going out to seek help with other people, there are also online help groups available, and support can be given by telephone. Support groups can be very helpful to get through the depression. Remember that there are other people out there that are feeling the same thing as you. It could be helpful to share your journey with other people similar to you. You can meet new people, and share different ways to cope with the depression. It is also a good way to receive encouragement and to encourage others to get past the hard times. There is hope to get your life back on track. Although a person may be nervous to share what they are feeling with people that they don't know, it is a good way to listen to others share their experiences. There are many ways to find local help groups like searching the internet or phonebook or newspaper. You're not in this alone, there are many other people out there that are just like you, so support groups could really help to ease the depression.
Antidepressants
Antidepressants seem like a good way to make a depressed person feel better. In reality, antidepressants are overused and over prescribed. The use of antidepressants could give a person unwanted side effects. The overuse of antidepressants is a major public health issue. The prescribing of antidepressants has increased between 4 and 10 fold in the past decade. There are less people receiving antidepressants that are severely depressed than those that are only mildly depressed. In some cases, using antidepressants can deny a person the ability to receive health insurance. Insurance companies are not doing this to discriminate against people with mental illnesses. They are just trying to make it the most affordable for the most amount of people. There are millions of people using antidepressants. Since 1998, the sales of antidepressants has doubled. Since 2003, there has been nearly $13 million in sales for antidepressants. Antidepressants are very expensive for the consumer. They are prescribed too much for people that do not actually need them. Antidepressants can be prescribed for postpartum depression, panic disorders, social anxiety, sleep apnea, and smoking addiction.
Some side effects of antidepressants can include: dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, constipation, sedation, sleep disruption, weight gain, headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, agitation, and anxiety, and more..
If there are so many possible side effects, than why would a person want to take these antidepressants?

Ways to Cope With Depression
Depression is hard to go through. Sometimes it is just good if you do simple things to make you feel better. Comforting activities that help to relax can really help. Taking a long bubble bath or a hot shower could help you relax. Spending time with your pets can also be beneficial. Its always nice taking a long walk with your dog or curling up with your cat. Watching your favorite movie is also a good way to cope. Writing what your feeling down on paper is a good way to let it out. Whether its poetry, prose, or a journal, anything could help to relieve what you are feeling. Going to a park where it is relaxing and peaceful is a great way to boost your mood. Spending time with your family and friends is fun. Do something that you like to do.
Lifestyle changes like sleeping more and eating healthy and exercising can make a person feel good about themselves. Being active is much better than staying at home. It can help to ease the symptoms of depression. It helps to increase blood and oxygen flow throughout the body. Finding ways to deal with stress by doing breathing exercises can be very calming. Also, volunteering in your community is a great way to stay connected and do a good thing for the community.

Suicide and depression

If a person with depression does not seek treatment, they may have a possible risk of committing suicide. It is not uncommon for a depressed individual to experience thoughts of suicide. Many times, if a person is severily depressed, they do not have the energy to commit suicide. It is when a person's depression is lifted that they are more likely to harm themselves. It is serious when a person is having these suicidal thoughts and they should consult help immediately. If you know someone that is experiencing these thoughts, make sure that you help them and don't avoid the situation. Take the threat seriously and don't underestimate what a person is capable of. Symptoms of suicide are threats of talking about killing oneself, preparing for death, talking like there is no hope for the future, and acting and talking like no one else cares. Up to 15% of people who are clinically depressed die of suicide.
Signs of Depression
There are many symptoms of depression. A person's whole lifestyle could change if they are experiencing depression. Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" feelings and feelings of hopelessness and pessimism are signs to look for in a depressed person. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness, irritability, and restlessness go hand in hand with depression. If you know someone that suddenly shows a loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, they could be depressed. More symptoms of depression are fatigue and decreased energy, difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions, insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping. Overeating, or sudden appetite loss is also a symptom of depression. If a person has thoughts of suicide, or attempts at taking their own life, they have severe depression and they need to get help. Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment are also symptoms of depression. Different people experience different symptoms for depression depending on how severe their condition is. It can vary from person to person which symptoms are present.
What is depression?
Depression is a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity. It is not when a person is just feeling sad or blue, because everyone does every once in a while. It is a serious condition when a person has these feelings all the time and it interferes with their daily lives. Many people with a serious condition of depression do not seek help when it could really benefit them. There are many different forms of depression. Major depressive disorder disables a person from functioning normally with their everyday life. Dysthymic disorder is a long term form of depression, but it has less serious symptoms than major depressive disorder. Psychotic depression is when a person with a serious depressive disorder experiences hallucinations, delusions, and a break with reality. Postpartum depression occurs when a new mother has a major depressive period one month after delivery of her child. Seasonal affective disorder occurs during the winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Normally, this disorder lifts during the spring and summer when there is more sunlight present. As you can see, there are many different types of depression to be treated.
